The Initial Call

Your first contact with Apex Recovery will be a confidential, non-judgmental conversation with an expert care provider. Besides insurance verification and a brief clinical screening, this initial call will help you determine which type of treatment may achieve your goals.

In-Person Assessment

After that first call, you’ll meet a member of our care team in person to begin building your treatment plan. As they better understand your wants and needs, they’ll help you set expectations for personalized outpatient rehab and recommend evidence-based therapies that meet them.

Understanding Your Options:
PHP vs. IOP care in San Diego

Intensive Outpatient Programs

Intensive Outpatient Programs, or IOPs, offer a structured level of care that includes several hours of therapy and support each week. While they still allow you to live at home, they’re often a valuable next step for those transitioning from inpatient treatment. If you’re managing your symptoms but still need ongoing support, an IOP can provide the consistency and accountability needed for continued progress.

Partial Hospitalization Programs

Partial Hospitalization Programs, or PHPs, build on the work accomplished during initial substance use disorder treatment. They provide highly structured care that helps patients solidify their progress and build healthy habits for long-term wellness. And though they call for more effort than an IOP, they also let you keep living at home — and provide an insurance-friendly alternative to inpatient treatment.

The most important thing to remember: Both are well-respected avenues for care. The American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) lists them at Level 2 in their Criteria, indicating a greater level of care than standard outpatient programs.

A Day in the Life at our Outpatient Rehab Facility

Determining expectations for evidence-based outpatient treatment should be simple — and at Apex Recovery, it is. An average day at our San Diego care center looks like this.

PHP or IOP, each day in treatment begins with a welcoming check in. After connecting with your care team and the rest of the Apex community, you’ll set daily intentions to help guide your day’s work.

Apex Recovery Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) group therapy

With help from licensed clinicians, you’ll engage with other patients during group therapy sessions — all implementing Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and other evidence-based methodologies.

After group work, you’ll sit down with your primary therapist for one-on-one conversations to address the underlying mental health conditions that may be fueling your addiction. This is your time to open up — you can discuss personal milestones, trauma, anything you need.

Apex Recovery Group Meditation

Our San Diego intensive outpatient mental health programs make ample use of wellness practices — everything from art therapy to mindfulness. These sessions give you additional tools to use when cravings strike, and help preserve the work done in traditional therapy.

Finally, head home for the night armed with an action plan to help you navigate real-world scenarios. You’ll put your new skills to use in everyday life until it’s time for you to visit us again. (And if you find yourself struggling, call us: We’re always there to support you.)

Building Your Support Network: Family & Alumni Involvement

Strong relationships matter during and after treatment; where evidence-based methodologies drop off, your bonds with peers and loved ones fill the gaps. Apex Recovery recognizes the value of a sturdy support network, and our care team will help you build one that you can lean on well into the future.

Healing Old Relationships

Family therapy sessions, educational seminars, and other workshops help undo the damage addiction causes. With time, effort, and the assistance of our licensed clinicians, you’ll regain your loved ones’ trust — and rebuild relationships that are key to sustainable sobriety.

Creating New Connections

Your connection to Apex Recovery doesn’t end when you graduate. As an alumnus, you’ll access community support events, participate in check-ins, and have the chance to join peer groups that encourage your ongoing growth and success.

Our Core Philosophy of Support

There’s no schedule for outpatient substance abuse treatment, and Apex Recovery will never force one on you. Our philosophy centers on truly individualized care, where time isn’t of the essence. Your care team will dynamically adjust your treatment plan as you progress — and if you happen to stumble, they’ll gladly revisit past sessions to get you back on track. Why? Because there’s no one-size-fits-all approach to addiction recovery; person-to-person care will always prove more effective than a generic checklist.
