What is Alcohol Use Disorder?

The American Psychological Association describes the condition as persistent, problematic, excessive alcohol use that continues despite significant distress and impairment. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) expands on that, noting four different components of “excessive alcohol use”:

  • Binge drinking (having 4-5 or more drinks in one sitting)
  • Heavy drinking (having 8-15 or more drinks over the course of a week)
  • Any drinking during pregnancy
  • Any drinking before the age of 21

Besides the medical risks—like increased odds of cancer, liver disease, and stroke—alcohol use disorder, or alcohol addiction, can derail your personal and professional life. It can strain relationships with loved ones and cause people to lose their jobs. We’ve seen it firsthand; our approach to holistic addiction treatment can start undoing the damage.
